SAP Product Lifecycle Management
SAP Product Lifecycle Management is a set of product development, recipe, compliance and engineering capabilities from SAP embedded in SAP S/4HANA, used by process and discrete manufacturers.
Overview
SAP Product Lifecycle Management is the collective name for the product development capabilities that SAP SE delivers within and around SAP S/4HANA. They include material and BOM management, engineering change records, document management, product lifecycle costing, the Engineering Control Center for linking CAD data to business data, recipe development for process industries, SAP S/4HANA for product compliance (substance tracking, classification and hazardous goods labelling) and SAP Enterprise Portfolio and Project Management.
Because these functions share the ERP data model, BOMs, materials, specifications and compliance data are available to procurement, production and sales without a separate integration layer. Capabilities are offered across SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, private cloud through RISE with SAP, and on-premises editions, with AI features exposed through SAP's Joule assistant. Implementation is typically delivered by SAP partners.
Since 2020 SAP and Siemens have partnered on PLM: SAP resells Siemens Teamcenter as the foundation for engineering collaboration and design data management, and the two firms co-developed a connector between Teamcenter and SAP S/4HANA. In practice this means many SAP customers combine SAP PLM functions for recipes, compliance and ERP-side product data with Teamcenter or another engineering PLM for CAD-centric work. SAP PLM is most widely used in chemicals, food and beverage, consumer products and pharmaceuticals, and in discrete manufacturers that run SAP ERP.
Best fit
SAP S/4HANA customers, particularly in process industries, that want recipe, specification and compliance data managed inside the ERP core.
Presence in Europe
SAP is headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, and its PLM capabilities are implemented across Europe by a dense partner ecosystem that includes specialist PLM consultancies.
Strengths
- Product data, BOMs and compliance information share the SAP S/4HANA data model, which removes a PLM-ERP integration layer.
- Recipe development and SAP S/4HANA for product compliance are well established in chemicals, food and consumer products.
- The partnership with Siemens gives SAP customers a supported route to Teamcenter for CAD-centric engineering processes.
- A large partner ecosystem across Europe provides implementation and support capacity.
Considerations
- CAD-centric engineering data management typically relies on Teamcenter or another PLM system, so many customers run two systems.
- Capabilities are spread across several SAP products and editions, which makes scoping and licensing analysis essential.
- Engineering users may find ERP-based interfaces less suited to iterative design work than dedicated PLM tools.
