Aras Innovator

Aras Innovator is a low-code PLM platform from Aras Corporation for discrete manufacturers, deployable as SaaS or self-hosted, with subscription-based upgrades that preserve customisations.

Overview

Aras Innovator is a model-based, low-code platform for building PLM and digital thread applications. Aras supplies applications for product engineering, BOM and change management, configuration and variant management, requirements, quality planning, manufacturing process planning, technical documentation and field service, and customers extend them with the platform's data modelling and workflow tools. The platform is built on Microsoft .NET and SQL Server, and its SaaS edition is hosted on Microsoft Azure.

A distinctive element of the commercial model is that upgrades are included in the Aras subscription as a managed service, and Aras states that customisation does not block the upgrade path. Customers can run the same functionality as SaaS or deploy it themselves on premises or in their own cloud. Aras has historically made Innovator downloadable at no licence cost, with revenue coming from subscriptions for support, upgrades and services.

Aras Corporation was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Andover, Massachusetts. In January 2022 it acquired Minerva, its largest implementation partner, and Leon Lauritsen, formerly Minerva's leader, became CEO in September 2025. Aras also invested in XPLM, a CAD integration specialist. Typical customers are automotive, aerospace and defence, industrial equipment, medical device and high-tech manufacturers that need configurable processes and a traceable digital thread across engineering, manufacturing and service.

Best fit

Discrete manufacturers with complex or changing processes that want to configure and extend PLM themselves while keeping a supported upgrade path.

Presence in Europe

Aras has subsidiaries in Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Switzerland and Poland, and its 2022 acquisition of Minerva added teams in Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Strengths

  • The low-code data model and workflow tools allow extensive tailoring of objects, relationships and processes.
  • Managed upgrades are included in the subscription, and Aras states that customisations do not prevent upgrading.
  • The same functionality is available as SaaS on Microsoft Azure or self-hosted, which supports varied IT policies.
  • A European entity network plus the former Minerva teams provide local delivery capacity in many EU countries.

Considerations

  • Flexibility shifts design responsibility to the customer, so governance of the data model and configuration is needed to keep the model maintainable.
  • Out-of-the-box process templates are less prescriptive than some packaged SaaS PLM products, which can extend initial design phases.
  • Formulation and process-industry capabilities are outside the platform's core application set.
