Arena PLM

Arena PLM is a cloud-native SaaS product lifecycle management application from Arena, a PTC business, combining BOM, change, quality and supplier collaboration for electronics and medical device companies.

Overview

Arena PLM is one of the earliest cloud-native PLM products. It was launched in 2000 as BOMControl by Bom.com, which renamed itself Arena Solutions in 2003. The product manages items and BOMs, engineering change, documents, projects and supply chain collaboration in a multi-tenant SaaS application. Arena QMS, introduced in 2016, links design controls, requirements, issues, training and validation to the product record, supporting FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and 820, ISO 13485, EU MDR and AS9100 processes, while compliance tracking covers RoHS, REACH and conflict minerals.

Arena acquired Omnify Software in 2018, adding customers in electronics, medical devices, aerospace and telecommunications. PTC completed its acquisition of Arena in January 2021, and the product now operates as Arena, a PTC business, alongside Onshape in PTC's SaaS portfolio. Arena SCI adds electronic component supply chain intelligence, Arena Analytics provides reporting, and Arena Connect is an integration platform for linking ERP, CAD and other systems. In December 2025 PTC launched an Arena AI engine built on Amazon Bedrock, with natural-language search, an AI assistant and file summaries and comparisons.

Typical customers are electronics, medical device, high-tech and aerospace companies, often fast-growing firms that outsource manufacturing and need to share BOMs and changes with contract manufacturers and suppliers.

Best fit

Electronics, medical device and high-tech companies, often with outsourced manufacturing, that want PLM and QMS in one SaaS application without managing infrastructure.

Presence in Europe

Arena operates separate Europe and UK service environments for EMEA customers, offers German, French and Spanish language sites, and is supported through PTC's European organisation.

Strengths

  • Multi-tenant SaaS delivery provides fast deployment, automatic updates and browser access for suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • Combined PLM and QMS supports regulated medical device and aerospace processes on one product record.
  • Arena SCI and supplier collaboration features address electronic component sourcing and lifecycle risk.
  • Arena Connect and a developer platform provide packaged and API-based integration options.

Considerations

  • The product is SaaS only, which may not fit organisations that require on-premises deployment.
  • CAD data management is lighter than in CAD-centric PLM systems, so mechanical-design-heavy firms may need a separate PDM or the Onshape link.
  • Process-industry formulation and recipe management are outside the product's scope.
